On the way down the mountain today, it made a clanking sound on the front passenger side. Every time I hit the brakes, it made a clanking and grinding sound on the right side, but not excessively loud. Brake function was only mildly diminished, so I limped it the short distance home. I do not have jack stands, so I do not want to crawl under it tonight. Any ideas?

Disks? Maybe your caliper is loose.

Lining separation/pad escape? If they were drums I would have suspected an adjuster drop, but discs, different set of possibilities.
Could be you lost a caliper slide bolt, too.

Loose caliper? Blown wheel bearing? Loose bolt in the control arm? How much do you trust Nikons work now?

Could it be a rock or pebble in the brake?

I’d pull the wheel off to inspect the brake. Sounds like a caliper bolt could have come loose or a pad might be cranky? Regardless, You’d probably have to pull a wheel to see anything.

I had a clunk when I hit the brakes for a while that was a slightly-loose control arm bolt, but if the brake function is dimished and something’s grinding I’d say pull the wheel and make sure everything is tight with the caliper, wheel bearing, etc.

Yeah pull the right front wheel and check it out. Could be any of these suggestions, a warped rotor generally makes a vibration under braking at highway speed so I wouldn’t think that. Pads pretty new?

Sounds like you have the perfect excuse to go buy those jack stands today. Don’t skimp on a jack and jack stands. Your life is worth the extra money. I recommend a trip to your local NAPA, and plan to spend a few hundo.

Don’t buy cheap ratcheting stands without lockout pins if you care about any of the lives entrusted to their support. Especially with a very light car on them, doesn’t take much to release the ratchet.
